Hottest Growth Areas in Photography for 2026

Are you ready to grow your business in 2026? Well, if you are not focused on the right photography genres, you could be missing out on a huge opportunity for your business and personal growth. In this article, I’m going to discuss the hottest growth areas in photography for 2026, based on the demand our Disruptor Marketing members are seeing. Let’s dig in.

Wedding photography bookings are stalled.

wedding photography market predictions 2026

If you are a wedding photographer, you are experiencing a bit of a lag in your bookings. Back in the day, we would book weddings one year or more out. Brides were following a simple model—lock in your date, book your venue, and then lock in the photographer. Those were the top things every couple was being taught to focus on. Today, however, things have changed quite a bit. Couples are no longer thinking one year out. In many cases, they are locking in photographers last minute. This poses a problem for wedding photographers who want to plan their year and know where they stand financially. It’s forcing wedding photographers to panic, and with good reason.

Today’s brides seem to be falling into one of two camps. High-end weddings have not gone away. They are still happening all over the world. They are not as price conscious and care about photography. The other camp is extremely price-conscious couples looking to check a box that they have a photographer and, in some cases, don’t see photography as a priority. Trends are showing that the middle of the market is beginning to collapse, and I think that’s going to be a problem for the foreseeable future for this niche.

My advice: find a way to separate your business and stand out so that you can raise your prices and appeal to the higher end of the market. Or commit to being the low-cost provider with barebones offerings. I think trying to play in the middle is going to cost you business in the long run.

Where are we seeing growth?

Boudoir photography is still growing.

As crazy as it sounds, boudoir photography has been exploding over the last several years. I’m still optimistic on this genre, but with a bit of a twist. “Boudoir” has different meanings to different people—people being consumers, not photographers. Some see it as distasteful, porn, etc., while others see it as a celebration of the female form. And, of course, let’s not forget this little blip of dude-doir that seems to be popping up. Although, I think that’s truly a regional play and not something happening around the U.S.

If boudoir photography doesn’t seem appealing to you, consider this: women around the world are celebrating their new bodies. They are investing in lip filler, Botox, Ozempic, etc. By the way, this is not judgment; this is acknowledgment of what’s happening. Not sure about your city, but in mine, there are 10 new “day spas” and salons offering these services in just the last two years. Demand is there.

This, to me, is why this is exploding and will continue to do so over the next three to five years. So, how do you leverage that? There are many ways. You can approach the traditional boudoir route. Or you can do like we have with our studio and take it the route of more beauty photography focused. I like the beauty route because it feels more approachable to a larger audience. For example, I’m not seeing my 76-year-old mother jumping into a lingerie shoot. However, women in their 50s, 60s, and 70s still want and deserve to feel beautiful. I think there is huge opportunity there.

Commercial photography is one of the fastest emerging markets.

Most people think about commercial photography and think product photography or fashion photography, but I’m referring to the increasing and insatiable demand businesses have for content work.

Every business out there, small or large, knows the importance of content creation. The problem? They have no idea how to do it. They know they need daily content on social media, use cases, testimonials, behind the scenes, Meta ads, video content, etc., etc. Sure, some businesses have a kid with an iPhone that can help, but the vast majority of small businesses need help and expertise, and that’s where we as photographers come in.

For me personally, I’ve been doing this since 2020, and it’s one of the fastest and most profitable areas of our business. Businesses have budgets for marketing. It’s much easier to discuss this with a business with a budget vs. haggling with a bride over an extra hour of coverage.

My advice: find a way to work with a local business you know and give this a try for free. Take your lumps, do the work, and start building an offering you can present to future clients. This will grow your business tenfold over the next few years. Not to mention, the work is a lot of fun!

What about the rest of the portrait market?

We are seeing that the rest of the portrait market is a bit stagnant. Yes, senior photography is still busy, but the market is changing in what clients want. Years ago, wallets were a HUGE add-on for our clients. Today, the kids don’t really want wallets. However, as of this writing, we saw a blip of parents buying wallets to put into the graduation announcements. Will that trend continue?

Family portraits are not dead, but certainly not a priority for most families. Today, families are being pulled in a million directions financially. So family portraits are tied more to discretionary income vs. life events. That’s why we are not bullish on this genre. So I would still offer these services, but just remember, you could see a soft market this year.

Headshot photography is tied to what we are seeing in commercial work. I think bundling a headshot and content photography/video offering is the best path forward for this market.

I know there are many other genres out there, and they are all susceptible to life events. Meaning, if you have a genre that’s not tied to a life event like marriage, graduation, business, weight loss, etc., you are looking at a client base that has to decide on how to spend their discretionary income. I think that’s going to be tough to grow over the next few years.

How you can get started with the hottest growth areas in photography for 2026

My advice: grow your business by targeting the emerging markets and putting your own slant on things. Offer high-end products and services to stand out. Don’t just offer digital delivery. Clients don’t see value in that. They will nickel and dime you. Instead, offer clients a full solution of blended digital and tangible products they can have and enjoy for generations to come.

Good luck out there!
